Who designed that?

A few weeks ago I visited my Prince George Street Design website. All my photographs were SIDEWAYS! At first I blamed myself, but then I realized they were ALL SIDEWAYS on ALL my portfolio pages! That is not a good first impression to make when a potential client comes looking for design help! Once I reached a human on the phone at my website hosting company, I was told that there was a "glitch" on the web design software, and they were no longer "supporting it". But the great news was (as I was told), was that A.I. could rebuild my new site and it would be much better!! And it would not cost me more than I had already paid! I had no choice but to give it a try.

Well, it was NOT better nor easier! After spending about four hours with A.I. -- me giving prompts and "it" answering them -- my site was getting built! But fatigue set in (for me, not A.I.) , and I said goodnight. The next day I logged back on to continue, and EVERYTHING "we" had worked on was GONE. GONE!!! "It" could not feel my pain, even thought it said it was unfortunate, it understood, and we could start again! At this point I felt like I was in a bad relationship where the trust was gone and is not coming back no matter no how! Not for this, not for so many of my lost hours.

Now, a few weeks later, my new site is up on a new platform that hasn't been replaced by A.I., and I am asking you to take a test drive. Tell me what you like or don't like. Tell me what you would like me to add, or if you were looking for some information you could not find. But, please don't tell me my photos are sideways!

This experience got me thinking about the human touch. I use A.I. for travel, and to get answers to the many questions I have. I find it very helpful! But I am in no rush to outsource my creativity nor my industry to "it."

How does this relate to design, you might be wondering? Well, I have had clients show me rooms that they have asked A.I. to furnished for them, paint colors it has selected, even art for their walls. Homes for sale are commonly shown with furniture A.I. has selected. But A.I. does not have your past, your family, your taste. It does not know your room's light, nor your personality, nor your habits. Isn't that what makes us unique? Our homes unique? What happens when we take the essence of ourselves out of things? Our trial and error, our accomplishments in learning new things for ourselves? What happens when we lose the human touch of things? I hope I don't have to find out. For now, I am just happy my photographs are upright, and I did it myself.
